I graduated from Anglo-American University in 2022 with a BA in Visual Arts. The title of my thesis was ‘The Artistic Approach to the Rave Culture in Prague: The Interaction of Light with Music, Space, and the Spectator’. That year I had begun working on lighting design projects for underground electronic music events. I was fascinated with this whole world, particularly off-location warehouse parties. What’s special about the scene in Prague is the artistic and almost theatrical approach. The artists here are very intentional about their lighting, often building sculptures or very specific compositions of light. What struck me the most was the relationship between light and music, and how it impacted those who were there for the whole experience. It felt like a work of art in its own, and I found correlations between these events and kinetic art and light art. I chose to focus my thesis on this topic, making connections between the Czech rave scene and the art world.
The written thesis was accompanied by an exhibition which I called Electromagnetic. I wanted to share the experience of controlling lighting with music that I had fallen in love with to those who visited my exhibition. To do this, I placed two midi controllers on a table in a dark room filled with various lights. The visitor was allowed to experiment with the various knobs and faders on the controllers, which triggered a light and sound simultaneously, thus creating an audiovisual composition. The overall response was very positive, with many viewers saying that they never understood how lighting was controlled in the club/rave setting, and it was an extremely enjoyable experience for them to manipulate light and sound together.
Materials: light bulbs, colored foil, sunstrips, led strips, fog, midi controllers, speakers, pars.
